The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in the Library’s Board Room.  Attending the meeting were Trustees Chris Vaage, Tona Casella, Monica D’Angelo, Kyle Tarbett and John Van Engelen; Library Director Tara Bartley; Staff Member Adam Day and Karolee Sorenson .

Chairman Chris Vaage called the meeting to order at 4:33 p.m. with brief introductions.

The Trustees MSC approval of the July 12, 2017 agenda. Monica D’Angelo made the motion to approve.  Kyle Tarbett 2nd the motion.

Approval of Financial Statements

John looked over the bills and recommended approval.  The Trustees MSC the approval of the June 2017 bills. John VanEngelen made the motion to approve last month’s bills, Kyle Tarbett 2nd the motion. Roll call vote taken.  Approved 5-0.

Tara – The library has used 75% of the budget.  Tara had asked staff to hold off on spending until this month.  She has since given the staff permission to go ahead and spend their remaining budget within the next two months.  We are currently at 67% in operations, payroll is 71%, books and materials is 72%, 100% of capital improvements and our income is 68% within the budget.

Communications & Correspondence

June 16 we had the Pop up Book sale.  Foundation made approximately $600.00. Hard backs were sold for $1.00 and paperbacks sold for 50 cents.    We will be having another sale Thursday July 27, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm to accommodate patrons who are having to work and cannot make it during the daytime hours.

July 28 we will be presenting Humans of the Magic Valley, coinciding with Arts in the Park. 

Summer Reading finale is July 25th for preschool and July 26 for elementary.  Teens have 354 reading logs, with 76 teens attending programs.    Elementary had 1060 reading logs and 579 in program attendance and preschool had 402 reading logs with 399 in attendance.  Two weeks remaining for summer reading.

Adult Service History Event “Who Lived in Your House”.  The final history event will be Preserving Memories.   History walks through City Park.  Murder Mystery Staff night will be Friday the 14th and Friday the 21st for public.  Family Day Game Challenge will be held on Saturday July 16.

Outreach attended Farmers Market on Saturday July 8 with the Library Activity Booth.  The week’s activity was Ocean Wonders.  Katie and Whitney attended Vet Day, Saturday July 15 at Harmon Park.  Wednesday, July 19 at 7:00 is An Evening with Austen.  A discussion of the life and works of Jane Austen.

August 21 we will be having an Eclipse Block Party.  The library received a grant for glasses.  These glasses will be available to patrons who attend the programs at the block party.  Tona informed us that the all students attending the Twin Falls School District are being provided glasses for the eclipse.

“Talk about it” grant has been approved.  Should receive in the fall.  The 2016 Idaho Library Stats are out and available to look at.

Business Issues


Foundation –Deed of Gift.  Document the money the foundation has given to the library.  Highlighting what has been given.

Library Staff


In August the library will be implementing new time management and print software.  Adam evaluated several software systems, with the highest cost approximately $30,000 and the least at $10,000 a year.  With that in mind Adam developed a system with a onetime cost at approximately $6500. Once the software is up and running Adam would like to offer to other libraries.  Thoughts are to set up kiosk at the Visitor Center, and other public facilities.


Library Director


Update on roofing project.  The roofing project is complete.  The inspection is scheduled for the 24th of July.  Versico provides a 20 year warranty.  Once the inspection is complete and approved we will write the check to Moller and Son’s for the remaining balance due of $28,875.00.

Strategic plan update.  On July 11th Tara met with the City of Twin Falls to discuss actions on where we can work with the City in their strategic plan.  The City of Twin Falls is holding an open forum to discuss their strategic plan at the Twin Falls High School on July 11th and Canyon Ridge High School on July 12th.

Trustee Connection will be held August 10 at the Twin Falls Public Library from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Lunch will be provided.
